So, one month from today I will be sitting in an auditorium watching a science theater production called MOVE that I've written, designed, and directed. The problem is that I haven't set pen to paper yet on the script. Today I did a lot of brainstorming on the idea of movement. The play has to focus on how things mover through space, and how we can use six simple machines to make heavy things move.

I've come up with a rough idea. An archaeologist has to find three pieces of a Movement Amulet- The Great Wheel of Something or another. This is a sketch of my ideas for a storyline.

I've never done an Egyptian themed show...

My friend Monica put out a request for a rendering for a play that she's producing for a hospital. The constraints were that it had to be on a 9' X 16' backdrop that could travel, and must use some stock images that the hospital had already purchased. The play is about HIV, and is traveling high schools- that's all I know. I really like using the 3D software, because it puts things in scale, and let's you get a good idea at how your images would look big...This is really important for me, because I work in an industry that relies on a lot of backdrops for sets.

So my attempts with holograms didn't go very far... back to sketching, but this time, digitally with my new Wacom Tablet. It takes a little getting used to, but I really like it. I have a great program called Corel Painter that I need to get used to- so why not devote the month of February to the Digital Sketch!

Here is my first go with original work- a few parrots and a couple of Tiki's! I used artist's pens and digital watercolor.

So this time I tried to minimize light and sound by placing my laser in a box. My first attempt didn't work.

I decided to open a new box of glass plates.

My second attempt didn't work.

It's getting a little frustrating- but I will champion on.

Hologram Test 2

Today, I tested the Hologram kit for a second time. I decided for this round, I would try a little Ganesh statue that I have, and exposure the glass film for 12 minutes (the maximum recommended. I also provided a light blockade for the laser. There really isn't a completely dark room in my apartment, so it's a little hard to eliminate all of the light. Unfortunately, my work didn't yield any results. Ahhh Science. That's what experimentation is about. Anyone have any recommendations?

First Trial

My first attempt at making holograms did not yield anything. It was a little disappointing, but I found the whole process fascinating. Traditional holograms are made with two lasers. The Litholo kit uses just one, and a beam splitter. I've never developed film in a dark room, so this whole experience was quite new to me. There's a lot of timing involved, and the worst part, is that I have to sit still for 5 - 12 minutes. My first two attempts (a toy car and a small bottle of nail polish) didn't expose on the film plate. Tomorrow, I have to check the film plate to make sure that the plates are not damaged.

Sitting still for 5 minutes was really difficult. Vibrations are the enemy of holograms, so you have to be absolutely silent. My cat meowed a few times outside my door, so maybe that's why it didn't work...

The plus side: the whole kit took less then five minutes to put together- incredibly impressive, since the other books that I've been reading on holograms say that it takes days to prepare.

Hologram Research

My research into the art of Holography has started. Luckily, I work in a museum that has a science and technology library, so I was able to find some simple books on Lasers and Holograms. I was able to get through the first one fairly quickly. The second one, the Holography Handbook, is a little more dense, but has some interesting ideas- like using Holography to create adequate distances of the starts (which the practical use of holograms)

A Hologram is made by splitting the beam of a laser. The two beams are brought together again at a special photographic plate or film after one of the beams has been reflected from the object.

The Hologram kit that I received for Christmas is from Litiholo, which is a company that specializes in Optical Holograms. There are many different types of holograms: acoustical, rainbow, white light, and open aperture. The Litiholo kit creates a reflection hologram that can only be seen when a laser is shooting through it.

One YEAR of Creativity

Happy New Year!

Today marks one full year of CosCreative, and being creative everyday for a year. I learned a lot from doing this project. I started CosCreative so that I could have a gym to work out my underused creative muscles. My job at the time had no creative elements to it, so I needed an outlet to do something- I also had a lot of free time, and this blog was a way to focus it. Through the year, a lot of new things happened, and the jobs and people I now surround myself with, challenge me to stretch my creativity everyday, and I'm really thankful for that.

What I learned from working on CosCreative2006:

Creativity can happen in the simplest of things. Yesterday, I had a flat tire. I haven't changed a tire in over a 10 years- I had to find some creative ways to fix it.

You can't expect to document creativity everyday. It's just too hard, because when you stop to think about everything you do, it can be overwhelming- plus sometimes blogger won't upload your photos.

Sometimes you need a break from creative work. Reflecting, reevaluating, and planning are all part of the creative process that I too often neglect.

So what's next?

2007 will be just as creative, but I'm going to focus myself month to month to learn new things. I'm fascinated with art and technology, so I'm going to try and delve into new creative ways to work with high tech toys The month of January will be devoted to Holograms. Other topics might include: Robots, Graphics Programs, Fiber Optics, LED's, Lighting...

I probably will not post everyday, but maybe a few times a month.

Thanks to all those who helped me out this past year with being creative! Let's have a creative 2007!

Orginizing the Creative

Sometimes you have to organize creative materials. We have 15 years worth of creative materials in our storage space, which is an old film projection room up a spiral staircase. Here is an overview shot of us just doing inventory of craft material. It only took 11 hours of 6 people working nonstop...

What seems like an endless mess, turned up some unusual things: a box of cow hearts, a bottle of glow germs, a $300 spotting scope, 100 lbs of glitter, enough craft sand to make a small beach, and huge storage bin full of... storage bin lids that had been missing for years, causing us to buy more storage bins.

This was the danger of our old storage space. Carrying antlers up a spiral staircase can be a dangerous activity.

Next up... 5 years of theatrical supplies, giant Legos, building blocks, and hundreds of binders...anyone want to volunteer as an archival assistant?

Cursive writing to the rescue. I love to practice my cursive writing. Cursive writing was the only class I ever got a "C" in during elementary school, so I hated it, but now I find that it helps to kill time during meetings- and it looks like you're being attentive and taking great notes.

A hot air balloon can hold about 6000 pounds of air, and about 200 kids inside...

I'm worried about where 300 Girl Scouts are going to sleep when there's a giant DNA strand in the middle of the museum.

Tomorrow I have to get up at 6:30 in the morning and see a GIANT balloon be inflated on its side.

Prototyping is fun, because if something doesn't work, you have to be creative and think of new ways to make it work- and a 2 and a 1/2 year lead time gives you a long time to be creative!

The building super installed a new buzzer system in my building this weekend. Every time someone opens or closes the door, an extended high pitched, piercing tone emits from the buzzer for five complete seconds. If someone keeps the door open, then it squeals for seven seconds. I sleep about 10 feet from the door, so it sounds like my alarm is always going off. I have had six hours of uninterrupted sleep in the past two days. I hate this buzzer. Luckily, so does another one of my neighbors who smashed this evening. Now it emits a low squeal that can be blocked with earplugs. This is how I feel:

Creative Overload!!

A major program that I have put together is starting this weekend. Due to a wedding, I had to get everything ready by today. At the end of a long two weeks of cramming for Merlin's Dragon Quest, I realized that my team and I pulled a lot of creative thing off (especially with a next-to-nothing budget). Here are just a few of the things that happened today:

Three hours of INTENSE rehearsal for Sir Sagramoure's Splendiferous Search for Science. Have to say that the actors are amazing, especially for putting up with last minute script changes, photo shoot with graphics, and uninvited television recording.

Merlin has lost 4 dragons in the Hall of Science, and it's your job to find them (and learn some things along the way). It was my job to buy these (which was much harder than expected). They all came the same color, and the awesome guys in exhibits painted them to represent the four elements (water pictured here).

Sheila the Water Dragon is running from a scary fire breathing dragon in the Preschool. We recorded the show earlier this week, but Miriam and Jennifer designed the puppets using aboriginal designs.

I've been in a bad mood for the past few days, which was made worse by getting a call at 7:30 this morning from a coworker who was calling in sick. I had to teach a "Fur & Feathers" class today which was not on my already packed agenda. The one great thing about working at a museum, is that on occasion, when you do teach, you forget about everything else for the hour. I had to use every creative bone in my body to keep the attention of these 2 & 3 year old's, and more importantly their moms and caregivers. Rugby, the Guinea pig helped out immensely. After the class, I was exhausted, but I got to color, craft, pet an animal, go outside, and look at squirrels.

Today I worked a lot on the script of Sir Sagramoure. It is really rough going. I had actually shopped it out to a writer who dropped out, and then to another who dropped, so I now have to work on it. It's sort of a forced creativity, but creative none the less.

When I found out late last night that I had to go pick up a guinea pig this morning at 8 am- I was incredibly unhappy- that was until I met Rugby. Rugby and I had to guest star in a Preschool Adventure today, called Fur & Feathers. I know nothing about guinea pigs- but I don't think the 4 year olds could tell. We just talked about how guinea pigs make good pets, but if you were to encounter one in the wild, you shouldn't go and touch it. Not all guinea pigs are as nice as Rugby

I had to jaunt in to the the Hall today to fill in for a planetarium presentation. I forgot how much I like to do these. It's fun to be a presenter once in a while, and I had 50 people at the show (the planetarium only seats 35). Nothing like seeing people clamor for some good ol' astronomy. This summer we're doing a night sky show featuring the myth of Orion, Scorpio, and Ophiuchus. Ophiuchus is my favorite constellation, because he falls into the Zodiac, but is not listed. This was one of the most creative places I've ever had the pleasure of eating. A real ninja castle in the middle of NYC. We started with a tasting menu of Saki

Then had the real tasting menu, which included things called the Magic Cauldron, and this fish thing made inside of a grapefruit. When you pulled the sword out, it started smoking. Who doesn't love playing with swords during dinner? I also had some conk that involved fireworks, and a magician who provided some white ninja magic.

Play selection committee

A long time ago, I agreed to be on a play selection committee for Rollins College. The Annie Russell Theatre is giving a $1000 grant to Rollins students/alumni to produce a play at the Orlando International Fringe Festival. I must say that I was a bit underwhelmed by all of the applicants, but it's the first year, and I'm happy that Rollins is actually supporting the Orlando Arts Scene.

I watched a program today about rocket packs and jet packs. They do exist. A rocket pack can only propel you in the air for 20 seconds. A jet pack can keep you in the air for 20 minutes, but is more dangerous.

Crystal Tree Scale Model 2

This isn't the greatest picture of this- it actually looks quite "lovely"- which is really the only word to describe a helix shaped crystal tree, made of snow crystals. The intention is to have a 9' version of this as the centerpiece for a giant crystal event.

I was asked to work on a scale model for the Crystal Winter Tree that I want produced for the Hall. I'm about 15% there. The structure took a surprisingly long time to figure out.

Fun with Blik

Blik just announced a new set of wall decal wich I've purchased for the apartment: Iron Vines.

It takes about 3 weeks for Blik to come, so I have plenty of time to design how I want this to look in my humdrum living room. I'm getting it in coco, but for now here are some initial ideas in grey. If you would like to have a go at placing the images, just comment, or email me, and I can send you a Power Point File to play with.
