Portrait of Princess Michelle
Michelle helped me on my portrait project by sitting for me. Her only request was that I draw her with a crown on. This time, I drew upright. I didn't have an easle, but I did use Snowman's piano for a drawing surface. It was a lot easier to see things in correct perspective. The hardest part was using watercolor on blue paper- it just took a lot of layers. Thanks for the helpful feedback on the last couple of portraits. More to come.

Portrait of Brandy
When I was in college, I drew a picture of my friend Brandy- it was a quick sketch, and it was o.k. Today, I spent a little more time, and worked on color value a lot with watercolor pencils and regular water color. It's not perfect, but looking back on the things I did on CosCreative in water color pencil a few months ago, I can see that I've come a long way. I'm going to focus on portraits for the next couple of days- I really need practice on eyes and lips. If you would like your portrait painted, just ask! I may just do it without you knowing anyway, but I love assignments.
As a side note- My roommate and I just had a conversation (post posting) about this portrait, which got me thinking. Yes, I know that this doesn't look exactly look like Brandy (sorry Brandy- a better one will follow one day), and we figured out the reason. The portrait's eyes are a little too close together, and her face is not as rounded as it should be. I think this has a lot to do with how I drew the picture- on a table, not upright on an easle. I've been reading about respecting materials and perspective in American Artist Magazine, and I think it's time for me to start drawing things upright to get correct perspective. I'm so used to drawing things flat on a table (from drafting and design work), that I never thought about this.
Also, please note, that I'm never upset about critiques on the pieces- if you have suggestions, it just helps me to be a better artist!
Self Portrait 2
While visiting my friends Lynn, Jamie, and lil'Wil, Jamie passed on some American Artist Magazines to me. One of the articles was about getting the most out of your colored pencils. I applied the techniques with my watercolor pencils, then added some actual water color to it, with pretty good results. I subscribed to the magazine as a result.

Mysterious Miss Squito Set Rendering
Here are the set renderings for the Mysterious Miss Squito. The show has a Film Noir Feel to it, so I wanted to keep the colors simple- Black, and two shades of grey. The Red Lady Bugs give it a little kick of sass. That's right- I said sass.

Easter Eggs
This project gets a C- Easter Eggs were a lot of work, with little payoff. It was incredibly messy, and hard to create the "easy as 123" marbliziation technique. Plus the whole house smelled of egg, vinegar, and olive oil.

Today I took my sketch pad out to Socrates Sculpture Park and did a couple of renderings. They're inbetween exhibitions so there wasn't a lot of sculpture to draw, but the setting is always full of crazy objects. I had a really great time outdoors doing this.

Greg's fashion/ with Squares
This is a rendering of one of Greg Climer's designs, that I've wanted to do for a long time. Greg used this bald model for his shoot, and I always had a hard time drawing his head (he has a head tattoo, which for some reason throws the proportion off a little). I got over my fear, and broke out my new square maker (sorry circles). I also realized that I need to get some black/grey markers- I had to layer dark, green, blue, and dark brown to get the desired Grey-ish/black-ish tone. CosCreative Bookmarks
Using the DYI (design it yourself) handbook, I decided to create an some interesting business cards/ bookmarks for CosCreative. I really liked how these turned out. I used some stock bookmarks, magnetic poetry (a movie themed set), tape, and some embroidery thread. If you're lucky you'll get one!

Bleached shirt
While at Urban Outfitters today, I saw a great book called DYI- Design it Yourself edited by Ellen Lupton, with designs from the Maryland Institute College of Design. An awesome project was creating your tee shirts using bleach to create the designs. I used a Bleach Pen used for my bathroom tiles, and made an elephant design on the shirt. The picture is prewashing. A lot of the Bleach didn't actually take after the first rinse. I think I'll need to use actual bleach and qtips like the book suggested. It was really fun, though a little smelly.

Dinosaur Project Cont.

Planetarium Shows
This is from Friday.
I've been working on a Planetarium show for the Hall of Science. It was a crazy venture, because it was something that the museum had written a title for, and then a small blurb, but had done no research on. The title: The Age of Aquarius Planetarium Show. This was a big challenge, because the people who came up with the idea of the show, never really looked into what that would consist of. We got a new projector at the museum for our little planetarium, so that was a big help, and with the help of the Director of Science Programs, and one of my associates, we came up with a pretty good show about constellations- with a touch of Aquarius. Aquarius was actually Ganymede (a boy), who Zeus fell in love with, and swooped into the sky to "service the gods." Also, we're not really dawning in the age of Aquarius, like the song said, but are sort of approaching it in the next 6 years, due to a planetary shift called Precession. It was a good venture (though a little stressful) because it helped me learn a lot about astronomy, which I've always felt was a distant subject that I couldn't master.
