Danny the Dumptruck

Today I worked on Danny the Dumptruck Saves the Day- a new puppet show at the Hall of Science. It was really hard work, becuase the script wasn't that great- Surprisingly, Dumptrucks don't make for the best storytelling. My staff and I put together a great production though- even if one of the puppets looks a little like Lady Elain.

dinosaur project 3

Here is a picture of a family of allosaurs. I had to throw some carnivores in there- at least they're celebrating the joyous hatching of their small allosaur. They'll probably eat him.

dinosaur project 2

This is the second piece in my dino project. I really like what I did here. The only issue I had with the dinosoaurs, was the choosing. I looked at the Pottery Barn version, and realized that there were all sorts of dinosaurs in the picture- I really hate when artists put dinosaurs in a picture that did not live in the same period. I started with stogosaurs- so I had to stick to the Jurassic Period- So no Ceratopians, or TRex's. Ellie thinks that this Apatasoaurus is babysitting the two Anklyosauri, who were fighting over the pile of rocks they were playing with. Can you think of a better story?

dinosaur project 1

I saw this set of drawings in a Pottery Barn Kids catalogue, and thought- I could do that, and I love Dinosaurs. This is going to be a series of 4, and I'm taking my time with it- No rushing when it comes to dinosaurs. This first drawing is a couple of gentle Stegasauri eating some lovely plants.

Agave- Monster: Illustration Friday

This is my illustration of Agave, from the Bacchae, holding the head of her son Penthues, which she ripped off in a dilusional fit. There are some other crazy Bacchae in the background too.

Play Directin'

Today I had to rehearse for Spaced Out Science with Clark and Ilana. They did an amazing job, and I finally feel that I have put together a show that tweens and teenages would actually like. It was interesting being back in the directing chair again. I feel I need to relearn to articulate my direction a bit more.

sad with balloons

I have to do too many things with balloons at work. This is a picture of me sad with balloons. Thanks to Deo for taking the picture, and enduring my lackluster modeling. I fixed it up with Iphoto.

self portrait

Here is my first attempt to draw myself- not in cartoon form. Ellie helped me out by reminding me that I needed my ever present 5 o'clock shadow.

Astorialand

Welcome to the mythical land of Astorialand. This was a team project with Ms. Michelle Franklin (also a resident). This is a perfect project for a rainy sunday, or while watching the elimination round of American Idol.

Song

I wanted to do something a little different, and since I had the day off, I decided to do a song- I chose Another Suitcase in Another Hall, because it's a little how I feel right now- though I did it in a Tom Waits tone.

Sewing

Sewing is the hardest thing in the world for me to do. I went to Greg Climer's (www.godspeedthewelldressedgentleman.com) today in Park Slope, to his design studio, and he taught me how to do a couple of things:
1. How to hem pants the correct way- he felt that using tape was not a great way to keep pants up.
2. How to thread his incredibly complex Singer sewing machine.
3. How to put patches on the easy way
&
4. How patient Greg Climer can be.

With his help I altered a costume for tomorrow.

This is how I feel today

I'm a little sad today

Ellie's Monster Hands

From Sunday

Acting

From Saturday.

So I have to do this Science Theatre Play at the Hall of Science, and I feel really strange about it. I think it's bacause I'm a little too old to do the role. It was fun to do the blocking, and the work on a character, but I just can't shake the feeling that I'm to old for it. I only have to do it because of actor drops, but it makes me think about when I was young, and was able to tackle old roles without fear- and now I'm afraid to do things that are to young- I'll get over it

Hand Picture

This is from Friday, March 17. Haven't been able to post in a while.

hydrangea illustration 4

So today I tried a hydrangea without a using pen, and I don't like it as much. I don't know why, but I just don't.

hydrangea illustration 3

I tried some different color hydrangeas today.

hydrangea illustration 2

I like this one a lot better- It took a lot more time, but I'm proud of it.

hydrangea illustration 1

My grandmother has asked me to paint/draw some hydrangeas for her. I think that this week, I'm going to focus on this project. Hydrangeas are hard to draw, because they are really intense little flowers. I did this yesterday, but due to some "creative situations" I was unable to post. Here it is!

Tattoo: Illustration Friday

For this illustration Friday project (Tattoo), I decided to work on a tattoo that I've wanted for a while. Garuda is mostly depicted as a full Eagle (usually with Vishnu riding on top of him). I found a rough statue of him, and turned it into a line drawing that would be easy to transfer into a tattoo. It would go on my back. I did a lot of tattoo artwork in January, so you can go to the archives if you want to see some practive illustrations, and a Hanuman Tattoo that I'm almost ready to get.

Scout Humor

The Boy Scouts of America are a tough crowd. When I sleep at the museum, I have to do a mini stand up routine before I introduce the magician. Last night, I tried really hard to figure out the scouting audience. I have to make jokes that are clean, and entertaining for the kids, and adults.

One such joke:

I only made it to TigerCubs- My mom pulled me out when it was time to sleepover at a museum-

that one usually gets a few laughs from the parents.

Anyone got any good Scouting Humor?

Caught

I've been a little behind posting because I've been sleeping over at the museum- that doesn't mean I'm not working at being creative, it just means that the Hall of SCIENCE has a hard time with TECHNOLOGY- and I can't post things for some reason.

Anyway- This is a photo of what I caught my desk creatures doing. What happened to Elmo was not pretty. I really need to put that TRex in a cage at night.

Ellie Spends the Day with Giraffe

I don't know why, but everytime I draw Ellie, she really looks like a girl from a Spanish book. This is her day with a giraffe. They try on clothes, ride the subway, go to a dance club (where Ellie dances with European Men with strange names) and go to a singing class.

Elephant Day 2

By popular demand, here are some images of Michelle spending a day with an elephant. An Elephant at Tiffany's, an elephant rollarblading, and an elephant at the movies.

Elephant Day

This is an illustration of places that my friend Michelle might travel with an elephant during the course of a day. Does anyone else have any other ideas where she might go? This is for a bigger project.

Insect: Illustration Friday

These are four illustrations of various insects. I really liked this project, because scientific illustration has always been my favorite. Maybe that's why I work for a science center.

Artistic party

Tonight I went to a fun party where the host had a large piece of Butcher paper depicting where a stylized map of Astoria, and where they lived. All of the guests had to add themselves into it. I drew a picture of my roommate and I two blocs away. I thought that it was a really creative way of involving party guests to add something to their house. I didn't have my camera, so I couldn't snap a picture, but maybe someone will email to me!

Going in circles

Tonight Michelle and I did a fun geometric project. Michelle remembered back to her youth when she would just draw tons and tons of lines and circles and color the inbetween parts. So we tried it with my circle maker. I loved doing this, and now I have a new screensaver. Michelle's is the one with Blue Lines and less circles. Mine has many circles.

IMTAL Logo

I am a member of the International Museum Theatre Alliance, and they are currently having a contest for a new logo. I did a couple of sketches this evening- still have to crack this one. I redrew their current logo at the top of the page (the two drama masks in a building.
